Kona waters are not something you learn overnight. I earned my understanding of this fishery through years of commercial and charter fishing, countless days reading the Pacific, and a lifetime of competitive fishing experience that started in Florida’s bass tournament scene.
As the owner and operator of Reel Havoc Sportfishing, I am personally involved in every charter. Whether I am coaching a first-time angler, helping a kid land their first fish, or chasing a serious offshore bite, I want every guest to feel taken care of from start to finish.
After 10 years on these waters, I know how this fishery works, the current breaks, the temperature shifts, and the bird activity that tells you where the bait is stacked before you ever drop a line.
Before I ran charters, I worked as a Scuba Assistant Instructor and Divemaster. That changed how I read the ocean. Most captains see the surface. I understand what is happening below it too, and that makes a difference when I am trying to put clients on fish.
What makes a trip on Reel Havoc Sportfishing different is the approach. On our longer charters, we specialize in live bait fishing, not just trolling lures like many boats out of Honokōhau in Kona. Live bait creates real movement and real action. You watch the bait, you see the strike, and you feel the fight from the first second. It is hands-on from start to finish, and it can dramatically increase your chances of landing something worth talking about.
My boat is a 39-foot Topaz Flybridge, fast, clean, and well-rigged with top-end Shimano gear. With an air-conditioned cabin, fighting chair, and everything you need for a serious offshore day, Reel Havoc is built for comfort and performance.
Groups are small, with a maximum of six guests per trip. That is not a marketing line, it is how I prefer to run. Fewer people means more attention, better coaching, and a better day on the water for everyone.
Whether you are chasing blue marlin, targeting ahi, looking for mahi-mahi or ono, or putting your kids on their first fish, I work hard to put you in the right position to succeed.

Captain Slagill’s Motto: “We’ve got salt in our veins and havoc in our wake. Let’s go catch something you’ll never forget.”
Captain Dusty Slagill grew up on the water, with salt in his veins and a rod in his hands before he could walk. Born into a long-time fishing family, his great-grandfather was a shrimper in the Gulf waters off the coast of Texas. His grandfather taught him to fish as soon as he could hold a rod. He was a tournament bass fisherman in his early years, rubbing elbows with the pros. At the age of 15, he moved to Hawaii and was taken under the wing of local fishermen who taught him the local ways of fishing.
With thousands of hours on the water, winning tournaments, and a passion for sharing the thrill of the hunt, the legendary Kona is now his home. Dusty is known for putting clients on fish and making sure every trip is safe, fun, and unforgettable. From first-time anglers to seasoned pros, Dusty is a great captain who has an upbeat, fun personality. When combined with his calm, confident approach to fishing, he makes everyone feel welcome. You will have an unforgettable day on board.
